Turning Awareness into Action - Raising the Bar on OTR Tyre Safety

Tuesday’s IQ Event drew strong attendance and delivered an engaging, practical session, leaving participants with insights they can apply on site. T&C’s Jonny Davies and John Morrison led the Tyre Safety & Awareness session for the Institute of Quarrying – North of England Branch at Tarmac Thrislington Quarry.
The message was clear: in quarries, mines, ports, waste, and heavy plant operations, tyre safety is high-risk, high-consequence, and early detection is critical.
Earthmover and OTR tyres operate under extreme loads and harsh conditions, where damage - like sidewall impacts, exposed cords, bead and flange wear, bulges, and under-inflation - can go unnoticed but requires decisive action when spotted. Inflation remains one of the most critical factors, affecting wear, fuel consumption, and the risk of catastrophic failure.
🔑 Key Takeaways:
Damage to watch for: sidewall impacts, exposed cords, bead/flange wear, bulges, and other visible defects.
When to act: know what can be monitored versus what requires immediate tyre removal or repair.
Inflation matters: incorrect pressures accelerate wear, raise fuel use, and increase failure risk.
Daily checks: routine inspections and proper reporting protect people and equipment.
❓ How T&C can help:
Regular inspections
Correct inflation by skilled Tyre Technicians
Professional earthmover and OTR tyre service and repair
Raising the bar on OTR tyre safety means moving away from reactive fixes towards proactive inspections, maintenance, and decision-making that keep people, equipment, and operations safe.
Whether you attended the session (or missed it), let’s connect. We help turn tyre safety insights into practical, on-site action that protects people, equipment and productivity.
